Inflammation is a word we hear frequently, yet many people don’t fully understand what it means or why it matters. While inflammation is often portrayed as something negative, it is one of the body’s most important defence mechanisms. Without it, we would be unable to heal wounds, fight infections, or recover from illness. However, when inflammation becomes chronic, it can quietly contribute to many of today’s most common health conditions.

What is Inflammation?

At its simplest, inflammation is your immune system’s response to something that shouldn’t be there. This could be an injury, infection, toxin, irritant, or damaged tissue. Think of it as your body’s internal emergency response team.

When your immune system detects a problem, it sends a message that says, “Something isn’t right here—send help.” Almost immediately, immune cells are dispatched to the affected area, blood flow increases, and chemical messengers are released to begin repairing damage and protecting the body from further harm.

This process explains why an injured area often becomes warm, red, swollen, and tender. These are not signs that your body is failing—they are signs that it is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

When Inflammation Becomes a Problem

Acute inflammation is short-lived and beneficial. Once healing has taken place, the immune system settles down, and everything returns to normal.

The concern is chronic inflammation.

Instead of switching off, the immune system remains activated for months or even years. This constant state of low-grade inflammation can gradually damage healthy tissues throughout the body. Often there are no obvious warning signs until symptoms begin to appear or disease develops.

Living with chronic inflammation can be physically and mentally exhausting. It may reduce energy levels, impair concentration, affect mood, and make everyday activities more difficult.

Conditions Linked to Inflammation

Scientific research continues to show that chronic inflammation plays a role in a wide variety of health conditions. These include: (see image)

While inflammation may not be the sole cause of these conditions, persistent inflammation is increasingly recognised as an important contributing factor.

What Could Be Driving Your Inflammation?

Many people are unknowingly exposed to factors that promote chronic inflammation every day.

Poor diet, chronic stress, lack of sleep, inactivity, excess body fat, smoking and environmental toxins can all contribute.

Two additional factors that are often overlooked are an imbalance between Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids and undetected food intolerances.

An excessive Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio may encourage the body towards a more inflammatory state, while certain foods may trigger ongoing immune responses in susceptible individuals. Identifying these hidden contributors can provide valuable insight into why someone continues to experience persistent symptoms despite making lifestyle changes.

Navigating the Noise

One of the biggest challenges facing people today is the overwhelming amount of conflicting health advice available online and across social media. Every day we are bombarded with new diets, miracle supplements, and contradictory opinions.

As the saying goes, “Whoever owns the message owns your education.” Unfortunately, this often leads to confusion and misinformation rather than informed decision-making.

Instead of relying on trends or guesswork, a more personalised approach can provide clearer answers.

The Value of Personalised Testing

No two people are biologically identical. What causes inflammation in one person may not affect another.

Evidence-based testing, including Omega-6:3 balance testing and food intolerance testing, can help identify individual factors that may be contributing to chronic inflammation. Rather than following generic advice, these tests provide information based on your own biology, allowing nutrition and lifestyle recommendations to be tailored specifically to your needs.

Taking Control of Your Health

Inflammation is not the enemy it is an essential part of human survival. The goal is not to eliminate inflammation but to ensure it occurs when it is needed and resolves when its job is complete.

By adopting a food-first approach, managing stress, improving sleep, staying physically active, and identifying potential hidden triggers through appropriate testing, you can help restore balance to your immune system and support long-term health.

Understanding inflammation is the first step towards making informed choices. When you understand how your body responds, you are empowered to move beyond misinformation and take meaningful action towards a healthier, more energetic future.
